Inviting IN, Growing UP, and Sending OUT
Rev. Cheryl Nelson, Associate Pastor
Pastor Cheryl returned to the staff of Benton UMC in June, 2012, in a part-time position as the Pastor of Visitation. She was our Associate Pastor from June, 2005, until January, 2010, when she “retired.” Her first career was teaching High School English, which she did at Benton HS between 1987 and 2001. She and her husband Jackie have lived in Benton for 25 years; they have two sons, Jonathan and Kirk, and four grandchildren, who live in Austin and New Orleans, respectively.
Cheryl is a Local Pastor in the United Methodist Church which is a ministerial path offered to second career clergy, requiring that they simply complete the Course of Study, which she did in 2008. In her primary role at Benton UMC, she visits the hospitals and contacts those of the church family who cannot come to church regularly. She also coordinates the Eucharistic Ministry, participates in the Prayer Ministry, is a Stephan Minister, teaches the Confirmation class, and serves the older adult members through Bible studies and the OPALS.
Her enthusiasm and willing spirit bring a lot of life to our congregation, and we welcome her back home.
